Meandering Thoughts

Inspiration has been coming to me lately in fits and starts. Sometimes, I am moved to play music for a few weeks, then it will fade. Sometimes I am motivated to draw several life drawings in a spurt. Then, that too fades. So if my updates are few and far between, that is because my inspiration takes me elsewhere, briefly. My latest source of inspiration has been the undertaking of an entirely new story.
For those of you who aren't that familiar with me, I had been working on a story for the past decade or longer. Most of my drawings were centered around it, illustrations of the characters and moments from the story. After frequent overhauls and rewrites, I finally admitted defeat and accepted that the story could not be salvaged without a great deal more time and effort than I had at my disposal. And I honestly just couldn't dredge up the energy to fix everything wrong with it. I have been burnt out on it.
So I realized if I ever wanted to be passionate about writing again, that I would need to at last lay that story to rest, learn from my mistakes, and start something completely new. That much accomplished, it was remarkable how fast my mind suddenly began blooming with new ideas. As is my habit, I began bouncing ideas off several of my friends that are fellow writers and slowly a very interesting story has begun to develop. In the past, I created characters I adored, and then tried to wrap a story and world around them and it was just an utter failure. So this time, I am being more firm with myself and not even thinking about characters until I get a concept down, a world fully developed, and a history of said world, if anything is going to be believed or loved by readers.
My wonderful boyfriend has set to creating me a world with a will, and some of his sample maps are gorgeous. I'm very excited about it. I'm currently stuck on trying to decide what races I want in the world, a unique type of magic and use, and religions (which will come naturally after I get the races more developed). So far, on the races, I have humans, a now entirely extinct race of elves and some of their half blood descendants, dwarves, and a minotaur/Tauren type race. Dragons will, of course, be in the world, but they will be rare and distant from the races of mortals. I'm open to suggestions if anyone has any ideas of anything else to include. I have one concept in the works for a type of magic but I'd also like to hear suggestions for others, if anyone has any.
Anyways, that story is stealing the drive of my creativity for now, so don't expect too many drawings for a while, except maybe ones that might pertain to this new story as I try to sketch out new concepts.
